I found it amusing that we viewed the Post Secret website in class today. I found this even more amusing because my friends and I have been avid Post Secret readers for quite some time now. The brother of a close friend of mine is actually in one of the books (in a secret that portrays his 2nd grade class picture and how the girl has been in love with him her whole life, creepy). Since Post Secret began there have been several variations to this idea within almost any fandom. On the blogging website LiveJournal.com there are communities for secrets, such as those on Post Secret, in the form of LJSecrets and then through different fandoms (different types of secret communities for bands, movies, etc).
The concept is not a new idea for me, but it's still one that I find to be interesting. It's the chance for some people to get ideas out of their mind and into the world without having to publicly acknowledge them as there own. Standing up and admitting to something is not always the easiest thing to do and, I believe, more times than not people are often crippled by the idea of saying how they honestly feel or what they believe in. At some point in the history of humanity, probably around the moment that judgment came into play, people began to feel embarrassed or ashamed for their honesty. I am no one to be on a soap box, because even I fall victim to this at times. I am not really a fan of secrets in the literal meaning of the word. I really don't have a problem admitting to something if asked or put in the situation where something needs to be admitted. It happens to everyone at some point in time, but I'm perfectly fine with that.

So much of what you said I completely agree with. I think that many people kind of "hide" behind their secrets and Post Secrets allows people to share their secrets without the fear of being ridiculed by their friends and family. I think it's cool that you've been reading Post Secrets for so long and although your friend's card IS kind of creepy, it's pretty cool that it was published!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everything that you said, especially the part about being 'crippled by the idea of saying how they honestly feel'. I find myself in this position all the time, but never feel like I can express how I'm feeling. This site is a good idea even though I don't think I would ever post to it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, i totally agree with you too... I think it is a way that people can get their secrets out without stressing over the fact that, it will get out.....
ReplyDeleteI am almost jealous that you have known about this blog for some time. I think the idea of posting your secrets on the world wide web is very cool yet amazingly simple. I guess I have more of an issue with always admitting to something if "embarrassment" is involved. And that is probably why I am attracted to the whole idea of Post Secret.
